October Presentation Topic

Abstract

The purpose of the Pain Bar language is to assist the client in directly working with the emotional states that causes a cognitive, emotional or somatic stress response. Education around neurobiology is integrated into the therapy to assist the client in understanding that their experience is normal and underpinned by neurological responses. The clinician then works to help the client develop a whole state of being through affect management in preparation for EMDR. Clients are encouraged to use mindfulness to identify when they are in their “emotional addiction” and learn skills to move through those emotions.

Adjunctive EMDR:
A Model for Brief Collaborative Treatment
Friday, April 23, 2010
8:30 am- 1:00 pm
Suzanne S. Borstein, PhD
Approved Consultant in EMDR

Location:Charles A. Dana Auditorium, Maine Medical Center
22 Bramhall Street, Portland, Maine

Abstract

Non-EMDR-trained clinicians sometimes ask if “a little EMDR” might help some of their clients. When painful feelings about a single incident continue to intrude or interfere with otherwise productive psychotherapy, a short trial of EMDR may indeed resolve the impasse. By narrowly targeting specific traumatic memories or intrusive material, adjunctive EMDR can accelerate progress in traditional therapy, help the client and the primary therapist to clarify stuck points, and enrich the ongoing work.

This workshop will describe a model of brief adjunctive EMDR consultation, a focused application of standard EMDR therapy, provided by the EMDR consultant to clients in collaboration with their referring therapist. In this model, adjunctive EMDR does not replace or interrupt ongoing therapy. It is complementary to the primary therapy relationship,

The workshop will include guidelines for identifying appropriate referrals and for maintaining a collaborative stance with referring therapists. Ethical issues will be addressed, and potential pitfalls will be discussed. The presenter will describe a pilot study of this model, including qualitative and quantitative measures of outcome. Small group activities and handouts will guide participants in implementation of the model.

About the Presenter:

Suzanne S. Borstein, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist in private practice in Cranston, RI, and an EMDRIA Approved Consultant offering individual and group consultation to clinicians. Her special interests include the application of EMDR to unremitting depression and to the treatment of relationship problems. She has been collecting data to inform a developing model of brief adjunctive EMDR treatment. An avid proponent of sharing knowledge, Dr. Borstein has presented workshops nationally on a wide range of topics, including applications of EMDR to non-PTSD populations, ethical issues in psychotherapy practice, and creativity in recovery from sexual abuse.

For EMDRIA CEU’s pending for clinicians who have completed Level II EMDR training.

Learning Objectives and Time Line

1. Participants will be able to list criteria for appropriate referrals for brief adjunctive EMDR. (30 minutes)
2. Participants will be able to describe guidelines for maintaining a collaborative stance with referring therapists. (30 minutes)
3. Participants will be able to describe a method for conceptualizing the treatment and developing a treatment plan. (60 minutes)
4. The remaining time (60 minutes) will be spent reviewing a pilot study of treatment outcomes using this consultation model, and practicing the above skills in small groups using case scenarios.

Cost $45.00 in advance or $50.00 at the door.
